Understanding the NDIS: A Comprehensive Guide

The NDIS can be a confusing space when you’re first thrown in. If you’re here, you might be someone curious about what exactly it is, maybe you want to learn how to get involved, how to get a NDIS plan, and what you can do with it. Well, you are in the right place!

NDIS stands for National Disability Insurance Scheme. This scheme is run by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). To get on this scheme, you must be between the ages of 7 and 64 with a lifelong disability that impacts your day-to-day life. Local Area Coordinators and Early Childhood organisations are partners of the NDIS who assess and help people living with a disability to obtain a plan if eligible.

NDIS funding is used to support you to learn to live independently. Certain supports in your plan may be marked as ‘Stated’. This means that you can only use that funding for the support that is listed. Other supports that are not ‘stated’ are “Flexible”, which means you can use that funding for a variety of supports lines.

All support must be related to the individual’s disability and must help them achieve their goals, they must be ‘reasonable and necessary’. There are a lot of requirements for what is a reasonable support to be funded by the NDIS, so it is best to contact the NDIS or your providers to see if it is something that can be done.
